How to Become an IPS Officer After Graduation?

An IPS officer must pass the Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Services Commission ( UPSC ). The Civil Services Examination is also a qualifying exam for other services, such as IAS, IRS, and IFS. UPSC conducts the Civil Services Examination every year. It usually announces the dates and other details on its website in February. Every year, around 8 lakh candidates apply for the IPS, but only 150 are chosen.

The following are the Eligibility Criteria for IPS:

The Civil Services Examination is open only to Indian nationals between the ages of 21 and 32. In some categories, the age limit for the IPS exam is relaxed.

Candidates who have graduated from a recognized university, or who are in their final year of study, are eligible to appear for the Civil Services Examination.

Candidates in the General Category are allowed six chances to pass the Civil Services Examination. For those belonging to reservation-eligible categories, there is some relaxation.

Physical Eligibility Criteria for IPS

In addition to meeting age and educational requirements, IPS aspirants must also meet physical standards.

  • The cut-off height for male candidates is 165 cm, while for female candidates it is 150 cm ( there is a 5 cm relaxation for scheduled tribes and certain ethnic groups such as Gorkhas, Assamese, and Kumaonis ).
  • A minimum chest measurement of 84 cm is required for men and 79 cm for women.
  • Also specified are the requirements for eye sight.
  • Corrective measures, such as spectacles and Lasik surgery, are permitted for candidates.
  • Refractive surgery patients are referred to a special board of ophthalmologists for clearance.
