Basic Eligibility Criteria for Indian Railway Jobs
Indian railway services are divided into two parts:
- Technical
- Non-Technical
Technical and non-technical Indian Railways services are divided into four groups- A, B, C and D.
Group A and Group B are official posts. Medical Staff, Engineering Officer Staff come under Group A and Group B. The exam for Group A is conducted by the Union Service Public Commission. There is special class Railway Apprenticeship Examination ( SCRA ) which is conducted separately for the youth who are willing to join railway services just after HSC.
Group C are subordinate staff posts like supervisor, clerk and skilled labor.
Group D includes unskilled workers. The exam for Group C and Group D is conducted by the Railway Recruitment Control Board.

Group B/Class II Recruitment to Indian Railways
The recruitment of Group B officers is not done through direct channel, nor through candidate form. Employees already working in Group C posts are promoted. For example, in the Civil Engineering department, 70% of posts are filled through the same department’s non-ministerial Group C staff selection process: written test and interview. 30% of the posts are filled by Group C employees who have passed the Departmental Competitive Examination after serving a minimum of 5 years in the same grade.

Group D/Class IV Recruitment to Indian Railways
Group D includes posts like Trackman, Gateman, Helpers, Porter etc. In terms of age, they should be between 18 to 31/33 years (with age relaxation for OBC/SC/ST) and they should have permanent citizenship of Indian, Bhutan, Nepal. Education Qualification: It is necessary to pass minimum 10th class or Industrial Training Institute ( ITI ) certificate from National Council of Vocational Training or State Council for Vocational Training.
The application format is both online and offline and candidates are required to qualify the Physical Efficiency Test ( PET ) and document verification, depending on the post. The selection is conducted at the divisional or zonal levels, which are supervised by RRBs.
